Ladie's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris)

  • Antidiarrhoeal, complaints of the stomach,

  • decreases some markers of inflammation,
  • raises serum levels of the omega-3 fatty acids and eicosapentaenoic acid.

Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

  • Cough, asthma, glycyrrhizin alleviates asthmatic features,
  • angina,
  • lung disease, expectorant,
  • disease of the bladder, bladder stones,
  • complaints of the stomach,
  • disorders of the kidneys,
  • antiallergic effects of licorice are mainly due to glycyrrhizin, 18beta-glycyrrhetinic acid, and liquiritigenin,
  • glabridin from Glycyrrhiza glabra appears to be a promising candidate for memory improvement and it will be worthwhile to explore the potential of glabridin in the management of Alzheimer patients,
  • glabridin has a neuroprotective effect via modulation of multiple pathways associated with apoptosis,
  • glabridin inhibits fusion of the viral membrane of HIV-1 with the cell,
  • glabridin is commonly used in the treatment of cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases,
  • has therapeutic benefit against other viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cytomegalovirus and Herpes simplex,
  • in Japan, glycyrrhizin has been used for more than 60 years as a treatment for chronic hepatitis C,
  • two-percent topical glycyrrhizic acid cream (carbenoxolone sodium) applied six times daily in 12 patients with acute oral herpetic (Herpes simplex) infections resolved pain and dysphagia within 24-48 hours of beginning use,
  • in a retrospective study, long-term licorice administration for hepatitis C infection was effective in preventing hepatocellular carcinoma,
  • Glycyrrhiza glabra has been used as a demulcent and emollient for 2,000 years to promote the healing of ulcers by acting on the mucosal layer,
  • decreases serum testosterone, due to inhibition of 17-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase indicating licorice may be of benefit in treating women with hirsutism and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Lotus Fruit (Nelumbo nucifera)

    • Inhibits platelet aggregation,
    • treatment of the premature ejaculation,
    • used in treating bleeding gastric ulcers, excessive menstruation, uterine bleeding, nasal bleeding, blood in urine,
    • antipyretic,
    • strong hypoglycaemic agent, diabetes,
    • anti-inflammatory,
    • lowers the level of lipids in the blood,
    • improves learning and memory,
    • (+)-1(R)-Coclaurine  and (-)-1(S)-norcoclaurine, together with quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucuronide (4), were isolated from the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera, and identified as anti-HIV principles.
